INTEGERS AND THEIR SYMBOLS

MODUL 1
Unit 1

INTEGERS AND THEIR SYMBOLS
What are Integers?
If you look at thermometer, you will see that there are numbers such as 0, 5, 10, 15 and so forth on the thermometer scale. There are numbers above zero, and there are numbers below zero. The number below zero can be written or read as -5, -10, -15 and so on. Those numbers are called integers, the numbers greater than zero are called positive integers, and the numbers less than zero are called negative integers.
The numbers on some objects are written in a vertical number line, and on some other objects are in horizontal numbers line. The distance units from zero to 15 are the same as the distance from 0 to -15.
Two numbers are said opposite if they have the same distance from zero and have opposite directions on a number line. In a horizontal line, the number which has the symbol on the left side is always less than the number on the right side. Thus, 12 is greater than 10, it can written as 12 > 10.Because -10 on the left side of 10, -10 is less than 10, it can be written as -10 < 10.
